Super Power India: The Word is not enough

I have not read the books of management but I am sure about some of the basic principles of leadership. What my personal observation and experience tells me is that amongst a group you need to have a rapport which lets you take an upper hand to become a leader. This rapport comes from a confidence which is a result of the level of dependency of the group on you.

The Echo of the above observation can be clearly seen in the International community today. United States is a leader in this community because the whole world depends in some way or other on this super power. There’s an estimate that if US stops its exports today then almost 66 countries would die of hunger within a month.  That is the level of dependency of the International Community on US.

Now, how does this concept of rapport and leadership touches Indian dream of becoming a superpower?? Give it a thought. “Superpower” is not just a word. It’s not an Award for which we have to strive hard this year and cherish the memories in the next. It’s much more than that. It is a result of a constant grilling of new ideas and the hard work of converting them into practicality.

Today, Indian economy is the fastest emerging economy in the world. We are the twelfth largest economy. If I’d to quote Mr. Wiki then by 2020 Indian Economy will be amongst the top leading economies in the world. Many countries in this world are dependent on our Economy figures. Indian market’s Bulls and Bears decide fate of millions outside India. We contribute 1.5% of the World Trade. But do we behave like a country so confident and which has so great impact on the world Economy. NO!!

The rapport which I was mentioning as an essential factor for a leader is not at all good for India today. We have been backstabbed by insignificant countries like Pakistan many times. But we can’t make them mould their anti-India policies just because Uncle Sam (US) knows that we are soft in keeping our views before them. We still don’t tell them; rather we ask them for our every move

Take a recent example of the episode of questioning David Headley. The FBI has taken back the appeal of death sentence against him even when he is accused of plotting the biggest attack on India. Secondly, we were not allowed to extradite him just for some trivial and unclear reasons. And in reaction we can’t do anything. Why? Because we don’t think like a super power, we don’t think like a confident state, an emerging leader and so does other countries.

A typical example of such a case occurred recently in Pakistan when surprisingly Pakistani forces caught hold of the 2nd in command of Taliban, Mullah Baradar. The Americans expressed their will to extradite and question him for several cases of killings in Afghanistan. Initially the Pak authorities did not agree on this. But, after a strong warning and massive pressure from US, the FBI finally arrived in Pak to grill the terrorist. This attitude is what matters for a Leader. He has to be harsh at times for the sake of his people.

United States does not have such an attitude because it is a superpower. It’s the other way round. Just because it has such an attitude it is a superpower. The government of India just takes the backstabbing from US as a word from God without any further negotiations. Always, we are the one to compromise with our interests. If we had been given access to Hadley in time then the Pune tragedy could have been avoided.

Our Government needs to understand that Economy and GDP figures are not the only criteria to become a world power. A super power attitude is majorly required. It’s not the same situation as in 1971 when under US pressure our forces receded even when they were few steps away from Karachi. Now, the time has changed. India is stronger and bigger. But, this we still need to tell to the Big Bosses. This is why I said, the Word “SuperPower” is not enough.
